At Sensory Factory Preschool, we believe no single philosophy has all the answers. We draw deeply from both Play-Based Learning and Montessori principles — blending the best of both to create a flexible, child-centered environment where learning happens naturally, joyfully, and at each child's own pace.
Play is not a break from learning — it is learning. Play-Based Learning is grounded in decades of research in child development, showing that when children play, they are actively building the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical foundations they need to thrive in school and life.
In a play-based environment, children are encouraged to explore, experiment, ask questions, and make choices freely. The role of the caregiver is to set up rich, inviting play experiences, observe what children are drawn to, and gently extend their learning by asking open-ended questions and providing new materials and challenges.
Developed by Dr. Maria Montessori over a century ago and validated by modern neuroscience, the Montessori approach is built on profound respect for the child as a capable, self-directed learner. Montessori observed that children have natural periods of heightened sensitivity — called "sensitive periods" — during which they absorb specific skills with remarkable ease and enthusiasm.
Rather than pushing all children through the same lesson at the same time, Montessori practice means carefully observing each child, recognizing where they are developmentally, and offering the right materials and challenges at exactly the right moment.
We believe the best early childhood experience draws from multiple traditions. Our daily program fluidly blends Play-Based Learning and Montessori — giving children the freedom to explore and the structure to grow, all within a warm, home-based setting.
Children have meaningful choices throughout the day — which activity to pursue, how long to spend on it, who to play with — within a predictable, loving daily rhythm that provides the security young children need.
We don't see play and academics as opposites. We see rich play as the vehicle through which early math, literacy, science, and social understanding naturally emerge — and we intentionally design play experiences to nurture all of these.
Whether it is Montessori-inspired practical life work or imaginative play with blocks and paint, everything we do is hands-on, sensory-rich, and designed to spark delight. When children are joyfully engaged, learning runs deep.
Before we teach, we watch. We observe each child carefully — what excites them, where they are in their development, what they are ready to learn next. This Montessori practice keeps our approach truly child-led, not teacher-led.
Our home environment naturally supports both philosophies. The kitchen, garden, bookshelves, and living spaces are all learning materials. Children participate in real-life tasks alongside caring adults — just as Dr. Montessori envisioned.
Our small mixed-age group — 6 weeks through 5 years — is intentional. Older children strengthen their understanding by helping younger ones. Younger children are inspired and challenged by watching older peers tackle new skills.
This is perhaps the most important part of our philosophy: we tailor the learning experience for each individual child.
Some children are ready to explore letters and numbers early and thrive with gentle academic challenges alongside their play. Others need more time in sensory and physical play before they are ready for structured skill-building — and that is completely normal and healthy. We meet every child exactly where they are.
At Sensory Factory Preschool, we blend Play-Based and Montessori approaches as much or as little as each child needs. We can lean into free play for one child and introduce more structured Montessori work for another — all within the same loving, small-group day.
We communicate closely with families so that our approach at school complements what you value at home. Your insight into your child is irreplaceable, and we treat you as a true partner in your child's growth.
Schedule a Tour to Learn MoreThe first weeks with a new child are about watching and listening — learning what makes them tick, what they are ready for, and what they need most right now.
A child's needs change month by month. We continuously re-evaluate our approach, introducing more academic scaffolding when a child signals readiness, and pulling back when they need more exploratory freedom.
You know your child best. Regular conversations with parents ensure our approach aligns with your goals, your child's temperament, and the skills you want to nurture at home and at school.
Our goal is children who love learning, regulate their emotions, work well with others, and enter kindergarten with the academic foundations and the confidence to flourish.
Words on a page only go so far. The best way to understand our approach is to visit, observe, and ask questions. We love welcoming families into our home and showing you exactly how a typical day unfolds for the children in our care.
